History of Davie

Explore Davie’s history from the beginning

Davie’s story stretches back before its incorporation. As parts of the Everglades were dredged to make room for farmland in 1906, more people moved to South Florida to start a new life and secure their stake on land. When the North and South New River Canal cleared an area for a settlement, new settlers came and tried to make a life for themselves. The settlers called this area that would soon become Davie, Zona.

The settlers that came to Zona were serious about investing in the future of this new settlement, so they made education a priority. Thus in 1914, the settlers constructed a two-room schoolhouse to educate all of the settlement’s children. But soon Zona outgrew the schoolhouse and was renamed Davie in honor of R.P. Davie, a prominent developer who helped finance the building of Zona’s first school.

In 1917, the Davie School was built to replace the small two-room schoolhouse. The Davie School was designed by August Geiger, one of Florida’s most well-known early architects, and by 1918, the Davie School was open and took on 90 students.

In 1925, the town of Davie was formally incorporated, and from there it only grew. Like the rest of South Florida, after WWII, Davie experienced a population boom. And today, Davie has over 100,000 residents.

But no matter how large Davie has grown, Davie still owes its development and progress to the original Davie School.

The Davie School operated as a functioning school until 1980. And in 1984, the Davie School Foundation was established to honor the building’s role in Davie’s development.

The Davie School was the first schoolhouse in Broward County and the first permanent school in the Everglades, so as an integral part of Davie, it must be protected. The Davie School now has transformed into The Old Davie School Museum. Visit the Old Davie School to learn more about the early history of Davie and the South Florida area. The Best Schools in Davie

Find the best schools in Davie

Davie is a lovely place to live, but with any moving to a new place, one of the biggest concerns you may have is schools. Where are my kids going to go to school? Are the schools here good? What are the best schools? And, what do I need to know about Davie’s schools before I send my child there?

Searching for a new school is overwhelming. But don’t fret too much because we found the best schools in Davie from the compiled ratings of greatschools.org, niche.com, and the Florida Department of Education’s school accountability report.

Living in Davie, residents have the choice of attending Broward County public district schools, Broward County public charter schools, or a few private schools. Davie residents are lucky because Davie has extremely high-rating elementary and high schools. Davie’s middle schools rate above average, but they do not perform at the same level as Davie’s elementary and high schools. If you are unsatisfied with Davie’s options for middle school, don’t worry. You can also check out schools in nearby areas like Pembroke Pines or Miramar.

Elementary Schools in Davie

The top recommended elementary schools in Davie are Somerset Academy Davie Charter Elementary School, Atlantic Montessori Charter Elementary School, and Nova Blanche Forman Elementary School. Somerset Academy Elementary and Atlantic Montessori Elementary were rated 9/10 by greatschools.org while Nova Blanche Elementary was rated 8/10. However, all schools received an “A” from the FDOE’s school accountability report.

All schools exceed the state standards in standardized testing for math, English, and science. However, Somerset Academy Elementary leads the pack in all three subjects, scoring a 94% proficiency in math, a 90% proficiency in English, and a 76% proficiency in science. Atlantic Montessori Elementary follows close behind in English and math, but Nova Blanche Elementary outperforms Atlantic Montessori Elementary in science by a small percentage.

In terms of academic standings, all of these schools are great choices. But note that Somerset Academy Elementary and Atlantic Montessori Elementary are public charter schools, so students have to apply and be selected to attend.

Additionally, all schools receive mixed feedback and testimonials from parents. However, one Somerset Academy Elementary parent said, “This is my son's first year at this school. His teacher has a tough love approach with her students that has worked effectively on my son. I have to say that all whom work at Somerset are loving, caring and academically effective. I love that they are so hands-on and involved in the well being of the children.”

To find out more about these schools and read additional parent testimonials, go to greatschools.org or check out the individual school’s websites.

One Nova Middle parent said, “In 2018 and 2019, my kids did unbelievably well. The teachers may be overworked with oversized classes, but they can really teach. The ‘A’ the school merited demonstrates that. But I must really say how much the elective teachers have supported my 3 kids. The Chorus teacher, the Spanish teachers, especially. They're the best. And as for the rest of the teachers, most of them are Grade A. I appreciate them more than you can know.”

However, to read more parent testimonials and explore these schools more in-depth, be sure to visit their websites and go to greatschools.org. Remember if you’re unsatisfied with Davie’s middle school options, you can also check out other middle schools in some of our other city profiles like Pembroke Pines which has highly-rated public charter and public district middle schools.
